Paul Bettany is an actor who was born on May 27, 1971, in London, England. He studied acting at the London Drama Centre and began his career in theatre and television. His breakthrough role came in the crime thriller "Gangster No. 1" where he played a young psychopathic criminal. He received critical acclaim for this role, winning an award from the British Independent Film Society and a nomination from the London Film Critics Circle for "Best Newcomer".

After the success of "Gangster No. 1", Bettany caught the attention of Hollywood. In 2001, he portrayed Geoffrey Chaucer in the film "A Knight's Tale".
