Biography of Paul de Gelder

Paul de Gelder, an Australian Navy diver, became a victim of a shark attack that cost him his limbs but not his spirit. Despite losing two limbs, Paul was able to recover from the incident, return to the Navy, and even become an exceptional motivator.

A Life-Changing Event

The event that changed Paul de Gelder's life occurred on an ordinary morning during his regular training session in Sydney's bay. Paul was part of an elite unit in the Australian Navy, comparable to the American Navy Seals. He participated in serious military projects, worked in joint exercises with the US Navy, and overall, tried to spend as much time in the water as possible. His life seemed perfect, but soon the situation took a drastic turn.

Paul De Gelder

Following the training program aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Australian Navy in counterterrorism operations, de Gelder was swimming on his back in the bay. Suddenly, something struck his leg forcefully, and when he turned around, he faced the cold, black eyes of one of the world's most dangerous predators - the bull shark. Within moments, Paul realized that his own leg was in the shark's mouth. He initially thought of striking the shark's eye, but he couldn't even lift his right arm. It was also in the shark's grip. Trying to push the shark's head away only led to the beast biting down harder on Paul's flesh. With all his remaining strength, de Gelder struck the shark's nose. This infuriated the predator, and it began shaking him, literally sawing off his limbs with its sharp teeth. It briefly took Paul underwater before resurfacing, then started to dive again. Fortunately, Paul managed to escape and swam as fast as he could towards the shore. However, swimming became difficult, and he realized he had lost his arm and couldn't feel his leg anymore. Luckily, a small boat from the local fleet arrived just in time. The crew pulled Paul out of the water onto the deck, where he seemed to have died. Fortunately, it was only a technical death, and the crew managed to resuscitate him and take him to the hospital. Although he was in critical condition, Paul refused to give up.

Road to Recovery

In the hospital, Paul received some good news for the day - miraculously, his leg survived the encounter with the shark. However, his joy was short-lived as the shark had bitten off the upper part of his thigh. Additionally, he had lost the sciatic nerve, the largest peripheral nerve in the body. As a result, his leg was technically part of his body but practically useless. The doctor suggested amputating the leg and provided Paul with the option of using a prosthetic, which would allow him to run within a year. Despite being heavily sedated, Paul recognized the opportunity and agreed to the operation.

Almost immediately, Paul realized he had two paths ahead of him. He could curl up and lament his sad life and cruel fate, or he could try to extract the maximum from this battle with life. He didn't have to choose for long. Just one day after the operation, the doctor was astonished to witness Paul, who had just lost his leg, doing pull-ups with his remaining arm. Friends brought him dumbbells, resistance bands, and protein powder, which was enough for a decent recovery program. Paul decided he wouldn't be a passive victim of his fate, and as time passed, his determination only grew stronger.

Returning to the Water

The most important thing for Paul de Gelder was to return to the water - it had always been a significant part of his life. He didn't develop a fear of sharks either, but instead, he actively advocates for the protection of these rare (albeit extremely dangerous) creatures. Currently, Paul de Gelder travels around Australia, sharing his story with anyone interested. He managed to triumph over the challenges fate presented him, and now he hopes that his biography will empower and inspire others in need.+
