Biography of Paul Scofield

Paul Scofield was born in Hurstpierpoint, England. He made his stage debut at the age of fourteen and professionally debuted in Birmingham in 1944. Since then, Scofield has become one of the most refined and respected actors of classical repertoire, preferring introspective intellectualism and noble restraint over declamatory style.

Despite playing only a few film roles, Scofield is best remembered for his portrayal of a German officer in John Frankenheimer's "The Train" (1964). His most notable film role was as Thomas More in the adaptation of Robert Bolt's play, "A Man For All Seasons" (1966). Scofield's performance as More, restrained and noble with a deep sense of conviction, earned him an Academy Award.

He was captured on film in Peter Brook's monumental production of "King Lear" (1969-1971), portraying the protagonist as an existential tragic grotesque character. Once an unforgettable stage Hamlet, he played the role of the Ghost in Franco Zeffirelli's film adaptation in 1990. He also appeared in films such as "Quiz Show" (1994) and "The Crucible" (1997).
