Paula Raymond: Early Life and Education

Paula Ramona Wright was born on November 23, 1924, in San Francisco, California. Her father was a prominent attorney, and her grandfather, Farnworth Wright, was a renowned science fiction writer and editor. Growing up, Paula studied music, dance, and opera.

Modeling and Early Film Career

In 1937, Paula got her first break in film when she attended a casting call in Los Angeles. However, her father wanted her to follow in his footsteps and become a lawyer, so she pursued pre-law studies at Hollywood High School and San Francisco Junior College.

After a brief marriage, Paula began modeling under the stage name Raye Patterson. From 1947 onward, she worked with Paramount, Columbia, and MGM. In 1950, she faced harassment on the set of the western "Devil's Doorway" when director Anthony Mann attempted to force himself on her.

Return to Hollywood and Television

In 1958, Paula returned to acting and appeared in an episode of the TV series "Markham." She turned down the role of Kitty Russell in "Gunsmoke," which eventually went to Amanda Blake. Despite stating in 1960 that acting did not bring her happiness, she continued working in the early 1960s.

Personal Life and Later Career

Paula married H. Leslie Williams in 1965, but the marriage ended in divorce a year later due to domestic abuse. In 1967, she starred in the horror film "Blood of Dracula's Castle." In 1977, she joined the cast of the soap opera "Days of Our Lives," but left after suffering an accident.

Later Years and Legacy

Paula's daughter, Rae Dawn Cash, died in 1992. In 1999, Paula published her autobiography, "I Was Born Right, Where Did I Go Wrong, or The Misadventures of a Dumb Dame." She spent her last years in West Hollywood and passed away from a respiratory illness on December 31, 2003, at the age of 79.
