Pritzker Prize: A Prestigious Honor

The renowned Pritzker Prize, considered the Nobel Prize of architecture, has been awarded to Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The accolade includes a bronze medallion and a monetary reward of $100,000.

A Brazilian Legacy

As the second Brazilian, following the esteemed Oscar Niemeyer, to receive this prestigious honor, da Rocha embodies the architectural brilliance that Brazil is known for. The Pritzker Prize was established in 1979 by the Chicago-based Pritzker family, creators and owners of the renowned Hyatt Hotels chain.

Recognition for Outstanding Contributions

In announcing the jury's decision, Hyatt Foundation Chairman Thomas Pritzker lauded da Rocha for his "profound understanding of space and scale in a body of work distinguished by its powerful sculptural forms." Jury Chairman Lord Palumbo highlighted the laureate's ability to "infuse his work with the joyful rhythms of Brazil," while also embracing innovation and risk-taking.

A Lifetime of Architectural Achievements

Mendes da Rocha's architectural career spans nearly six decades. He has excelled as a practicing architect, a university professor, and the President of the Brazilian Institute of Architects. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Mies van der Rohe Award for Architecture in Latin America.
