Early Career at Treviso
Alex da Costa Barreto began his professional football career with Treviso, a Serie B club, in the 2003-2004 season. In his second season with the team, Barreto established himself as a key player, scoring 11 goals in 25 games and helping Treviso earn promotion to Serie A.
Move to Udinese and Return to Treviso
After his success at Treviso, Barreto was acquired by Udinese. However, he struggled to make an impact in his first season, scoring only one goal in 27 games. He did, however, contribute with two goals in the UEFA Cup matches against French side Lens. In the summer of 2007, Barreto returned to Treviso on loan with an option for the club to purchase him permanently. He scored 14 goals in 32 appearances for Treviso but the club could not exercise the purchase option.
Loan to Bari and Interest from Russia
On 14 July 2008, Barreto was loaned to Bari. He enjoyed a prolific season with the Serie B side, scoring 23 goals in 32 matches. On 3 July 2009, Bari and Udinese agreed to extend the loan deal with a purchase option. In late February 2011, it was reported that Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala had expressed interest in acquiring Barreto.
