Early Life and Education
Pavlos Carrer was born on the island of Zakynthos, Greece, into an aristocratic family with origins in Cyprus. His brother, Frederick, was a renowned politician and writer. Carrer's musical education began in 1848 on the island of Corfu, under the tutelage of composer Nikolaos Mantzaros. He later pursued his studies in Milan from 1850 to 1857.
Milan Years
During his stay in Milan, Carrer made his debut as an opera composer with several works performed at the Teatro Carcano. He also met and married the soprano Isabella Iatra, who sang the title role in his opera "Isabella d'Aspeno."
Return to Greece and Success
In 1857, Carrer returned to Zakynthos and presented excerpts from his opera "Botzaris" in Athens. The complete opera was premiered in Patras in 1861. His work received recognition and royal patronage, with King and Queen Olga inviting him to perform at the Royal Palace in 1866.
Later Years and Legacy
Throughout his career, Carrer composed several operas, including "Despo" (1882) and "Marathon and Salamis" (1886). While intended for the opening of the Athens Municipal Theater, the latter operas were not staged until 2003 and 2010, respectively. Carrer passed away on Zakynthos on June 7, 1896. His operas continue to be performed and celebrated, representing a significant contribution to the history of Greek opera.
