José Nasazzi: Legendary Uruguayan Defender

Early Life and Career

José Nasazzi was born on May 24, 1901, in the Parque Nelson neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay. He came from an athletic family, with his brothers, Domingo and Francisco, also becoming footballers for "Rampla Juniors" and "Nacional." Nasazzi began his youth career playing for "Belgrano Oriental" and "Reformers" before joining "Albión Cerro." In 1919, he joined "Rampla Juniors," where he spent 17 years and made 300 appearances, a club record.

Club and International Success

In 1927, Nasazzi led "Rampla Juniors" to their only Uruguayan championship title to date. As a member of the Uruguayan national team, he won two Olympic gold medals in 1924 and 1928. He also played in "Nacional's" 1925 European tour.

World Cup Assistant Coach

1930 FIFA World Cup

In 1930, Nasazzi served as an assistant coach for the Uruguayan national team in the inaugural FIFA World Cup. The coaching staff, led by Alberto Suppici, also included José Leandro Andrade, Ernesto Figoli, Luis Grecco, and Pedro Olivieri. Uruguay emerged victorious, claiming the first-ever World Cup title.
