In 1610, Peter Claver sailed to Cartagena, South America, a bustling hub of the slave trade. Driven by a profound sense of compassion, he dedicated his life to ministering to the enslaved African population.
Ordination and Pastoral Care
Ordained as a priest in 1616, Peter Claver immersed himself in the lives of his African flock. For over three decades, he tirelessly met arriving slave ships, preaching Christianity and performing baptisms with the aid of interpreters.

After a life of unwavering service, Peter Claver passed away in 1654. His memory lived on, and in 1747, Pope Benedict XV initiated the process of his beatification. Canonized by Pope Leo XII in 1888, Peter Claver became the patron saint of African missions and those who suffered under oppression.
