Pedro II: Emperor of Brazil, 1831-1889
Early Life and EducationPedro II, the second and last emperor of Brazil, was born on December 2, 1825, in Rio de Janeiro. As the son of Emperor Pedro I and Archduchess Leopoldina of Austria, he was the first monarch of European descent to be born in Brazil.
Regency and Coronation
In 1831, Pedro II's father abdicated and returned to Portugal. As a young boy, Pedro II became the regent of Brazil under the guidance of his advisors. At the age of 14, he was crowned emperor in 1841.
Political Stability and the "Crowned Democracy"
During his reign, Pedro II maintained relative political and economic stability in Brazil, setting it apart from the more liberal and democratic republics in South America. This earned Brazil the nickname "the crowned democracy."
Intervention in Political Affairs
While Pedro II avoided promoting material and technological progress, he actively intervened in political conflicts between the government, parliament, and political parties. He was respected by his contemporaries for his intelligence and leadership.
Social Reforms and the Abolition of Slavery
Pedro II supported the abolitionist movement and played a crucial role in the 1888 abolition of slavery in Brazil. He also promoted reforms in education and other areas.
Overthrow and Exile
In 1889, a military coup led to the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic. Pedro II was forced to abdicate and exiled to Europe, where he lived in France until his death in 1891.
