Early Life and Activism
Dragoljub Mićunović was born on July 14, 1930, in the village of Merdare, southern Serbia. He spent his childhood in Skopje, Macedonia. In 1948, while attending high school, Mićunović was arrested and unjustly imprisoned in the Goli Otok concentration camp in the Adriatic Sea, where opponents of Marshal Tito's regime were detained.
Student Protests and Expulsion
During the student uprisings of 1968, Mićunović emerged as a prominent leader of civil disobedience. He vehemently criticized the communist ideology and Tito's regime, which led to his expulsion from university. In 1989, following pressure from the International Labour Organization, Mićunović was permitted to return to teaching.
Political Leadership
Throughout his career, Mićunović remained a steadfast advocate for human rights in Yugoslavia. In 1989, he co-founded the Democratic Party, the first opposition party in Yugoslavia, and became its inaugural chairman. During the 1990s, he was elected to the parliaments of Serbia and Yugoslavia several times.
Speaker of the Assembly
In the early 2000s, Mićunović was appointed Speaker of the Chamber of Citizens of the Yugoslav Assembly. In this role, he demonstrated his diplomatic skills and ability to bridge differences among diverse political factions.
Chairman of the Assembly of Serbia and Montenegro
In 2003, the 72-year-old Mićunović was elected Chairman of the Assembly of Serbia and Montenegro, the parliament of the newly established state community. He brought his experience and wisdom to this position, effectively managing the challenges of a complex and volatile political landscape.
Personal Life
Mićunović has been married twice. His second wife, Dubravka, is an English language and literature professor. He has a daughter, Natalija, from his first marriage.
