Biography of Alec Brook-Red
Early Life and CareerAlec Brook-Red was born in Moscow in 1958. He studied at the Moscow Technological Institute, which was part of the Ministry of Consumer Services at the time. His first job was in the appliance repair service of the Solnechnogorsk District in the Moscow region, where he became the young head of the department at the age of 24. This was his first experience in managing people. Though he considered the team of 60 people he led a large one, little did he know that he would become an even bigger leader later on.
Afterwards, Alec worked in various cooperatives and in 1989, he successfully immigrated to the United States, where he had always wanted to go. Before entering the States, he spent a year in Italy, where he gained new work experience as a fisherman, hauling nets in the mornings. Despite the physically demanding work, Alec remembers that year as the best year of his life - a small Italian village near Rome, communal dinners in the evenings, pleasant people, and wonderful food.
Upon arriving in the United States, Alec had to search for his path. He started as a flower delivery man and eventually worked his way up in a fuel company. However, by that time, Brook-Red had already decided to start his own business. Interestingly, this decision was directly influenced by the need to celebrate his daughter Rebecca's birthday. In 1995, Alec noticed a gap in the children's entertainment industry while searching for a venue for the celebration. Soon, he opened a children's entertainment club called 'Funorama' in Brooklyn. Alec was able to attract investors – Russian immigrants who had arrived in the States before him. Today, a supermarket called 'NetCostMarket' stands in the location of his former club.
Political Career
In 1997, Alec Brook-Red was named "Entrepreneur of the Year" by Leisure and Entertainment magazine. According to Alec himself, he was surprised and proud of this recognition. In fact, his entertainment club became the starting point for his political career. Many people, including local politicians, visited 'Funorama', turning it into a community center. As a result, Alec formed connections and established relationships. Over time, he became a member of the local council and was later entrusted with the treasury.
In 2000, Brook-Red ran for the New York Assembly for the first time, but experienced failure. However, undeterred and even more determined, he continued his political journey. He finally secured a seat in the Assembly in 2006, becoming the first Russian in the New York Assembly. By this time, he had already acquainted himself with many American politicians and had proven himself to be a competent and hardworking individual. Alec admits that politics is completely different from business, despite his previous experience as a high-level executive. He had to acquire new knowledge and skills.
Overall, Alec finds politics to be very interesting. When asked if he is confident in his decision to pursue a political career, he responds wisely, "I don't think there is a normal, reasonable person who believes that they always made the right choice in their life, at any moment. I don't know." However, he sincerely hopes that his choice is the right one.
