Early Years and Professional Debut
José Francisco Larrea Maldonado was born on April 23, 1987, in the city of Quito, Ecuador. He began his football career at the LDU Quito youth academy, where he developed his skills and honed his talent. In 2003, at the age of 16, Larrea made his professional debut for LDU Quito.
Rising through the Ranks
Initially, Larrea played sparingly for LDU Quito's first team, primarily serving as a backup to Patricio Urrutia. However, he gradually earned more playing time and by 2006, he had become a regular contributor to the team. During the 2006-2008 seasons, Larrea made roughly 20 appearances each season, solidifying his position as a key squad member.
Triumph with LDU Quito
In 2008, Larrea played a vital role in LDU Quito's historic victory in the Copa Libertadores. He participated in three matches of the tournament, including the semi-final against Pachuca and the final against Manchester United. Larrea also took part in the Club World Cup at the end of the year, coming on as a substitute in the latter stages of both the semi-final and final matches.
Scoring First Goal and South American Cup Success
2009 marked a significant year for Larrea. He scored his first goal in the Ecuadorian league championship, a stunning 30-meter strike that earned LDU Quito a draw against Emelec. The goal was recognized as the goal of the week by the publication El Comercio. Later that year, Larrea contributed to LDU Quito's victory in the South American Cup. He came on as a substitute in the second leg of the final match against Fluminense, ultimately helping his team secure the title.
