Early Life and Education

Per Grundén was born in Eskilstuna, Sweden. He received his formal music education at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied under the renowned Scottish tenor Joseph Hislop.

Debut and Early Career

Grundén made his singing debut in "Porgy and Bess" at the Gothenburg Stora Theatre. From 1940 to 1949, he performed at the Gothenburg Stora Theatre before joining the Oscar Theatre in Stockholm. As a guest artist, he also graced the stage of the Stockholm Royal Opera, notably in the role of Symon in "Der Bettelstudent."

Move to Vienna and Recognition

In 1953, Grundén joined the Vienna State Opera, where he performed in "Fra Diavolo," "Der Freischutz," "La belle Héléne," and "The Merry Widow." Concurrently, he also performed at the Vienna Volksoper. In 1958, he was awarded the title of Kammersänger for his exceptional achievements.

Versatile Roles and German Success

In 1963, Grundén left the State Opera but continued to make guest appearances. He became known for his versatility in both operatic and theatrical roles. From 1967 onwards, he focused primarily on character roles, such as Lustigs-Per in "Skinnarspelet." Grundén also enjoyed success in Germany, performing in Hamburg and Munich.

Film Career and Later Years

Towards the end of his career, Grundén became active in film, notably in the popular comedy series "Jönssonligan." He passed away in Trosa, Sweden on February 6, 2011, at the age of 88.
