Early Life and Education
P.J. Patterson was born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, in 1935 to a farming family. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of the West Indies in 1959 and later studied law at the London School of Economics, graduating in 1963.
Political Career
Upon returning to Jamaica, Patterson joined the People's National Party (PNP). He entered the Senate in 1967 and served as Vice-President of the PNP from 1969 to 1982. In 1979, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
Ascension to Premiership
In 1983, Patterson became President of the PNP. He held the position of Minister of Development, Planning, and Production from 1990 to 1991. In 1991, he resigned due to a scandal involving preferential treatment given to Shell Oil Company. However, following the death of Prime Minister Michael Manley in 1992, Patterson was elected as the new leader of Jamaica.
Tenure as Prime Minister
Patterson served as Prime Minister from 1993 onwards, being successfully re-elected to the position. During his tenure, the Jamaican economy experienced some recovery. He is widely regarded as the first Jamaican Prime Minister to have both black parents.
