Peter Ackroyd was born in 1949 in East Acton, Middlesex, England. He received his education at Cambridge University and later at Yale University.

Early Works

At the age of 22, Ackroyd wrote "Notes for a New Culture," a documentary work that was published in 1976. His first significant literary work was the poetry collection "London Lickpenny," which was published in 1973 and showcased postmodernist influences, making it somewhat misunderstood by many readers. "Notes for a New Culture," released in 1976, was also met with unfriendly reception.

Acknowledging his passion for writing novels, Ackroyd published "The Great Fire of London" in 1982, which was essentially a reworking of Charles Dickens' "Little Dorrit." In 1983, he released the highly original novel "The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde," written in the form of a diary purportedly kept by Wilde himself. This work earned Ackroyd the Somerset Maugham Award.

Later Works

Ackroyd continued to publish novels, including "Hawksmoor" in 1985 and "Chatterton" in 1987. In addition to his fame as a novelist, Ackroyd became known for his biographical works. His biography of T. S. Eliot, published in 1984, received multiple literary awards. Ackroyd went on to write numerous biographies, including a highly debated biography of Shakespeare released in the new millennium.
