Tragic End to a Cycling Adventure
The round-the-world cycling journey for British couple Peter Root and Mary Thompson came to a tragic end in Bangkok, Thailand, on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. The 34-year-old pair began their trip in July 2011, leaving the UK on their bicycles and heading around the globe. They had already traveled through Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and China.

Inseparable and Adventurous
Peter and Mary had known each other since school, where they both studied art. According to Peter's father, Jerry Root, the couple had been saving money for six years in order to embark on this grand and exciting adventure. "I was so proud of them," says Jerry. "They didn't just talk about it, they did it!" Jerry also shared that both Peter and Mary were experienced cyclists and knew firsthand the challenges and hardships of life on the road. "They were happy together. They were living the life they wanted," says Peter's father.

A Journey Shared Online
The couple documented their journey on their website, Two on Four Wheels, and many followers kept up with Peter and Mary's travels on Twitter and Facebook. The videos they posted showed them swimming in rivers and lakes, as well as horseback riding in the mountains. They even witnessed an armed conflict in Tajikistan.
No Set Plans, Just Enjoying Life
According to Mary's brother, Ben Thompson, the couple did not have specific plans or timelines for their journey. They simply enjoyed their bike ride, cherished life, and embraced every moment. After Southeast Asia, they had planned to take a short break in New Zealand.
A Devastating Accident
The cyclists' bodies were found on the road, with their belongings scattered around. Nearby, a pickup truck lay in ruins among the trees. The 25-year-old driver, Worapong Sangkhawat, who caused the accident, also suffered injuries but survived. He will face charges of dangerous driving causing death and could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
Mourned by Many
Today, many people grieve for Peter and Mary. The senseless death of these two young individuals, who truly enjoyed life, has shocked the world.
