Biography of Peter Kenen
Early Life and EducationPeter Kenen, an American economist, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed his Bachelor's degree at Columbia University and went on to earn his Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Academic Career
Kenen taught at Columbia University from 1957 to 1971, during which he also served as the dean of the economics department and the vice president for academic affairs. In 1971, he moved to Princeton University and became the director of the International Finance Section. He held this position until 1999.
Contributions to Economics
Kenen is best known for his research on optimal currency areas. He showed that countries with diversified internal production are more likely to become optimal currency areas compared to groups of countries specializing in narrow sectors. Additionally, he was one of the early advocates for floating exchange rates for small countries. Kenen has published several well-known articles on various economic topics and has served as an editor for notable economic publications.
Public Service
Apart from his academic pursuits, Kenen has provided advisory services to various institutions, including the Council of Economic Advisers, the Office of Management and Budget, the Federal Reserve, the International Monetary Fund, and the U.S. Treasury. He was a member of President John F. Kennedy's target group on foreign economic policy, the advisory committee on balance of payments statistics, and the group of economic consultants for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Later Career and Affiliations
From 2000 to 2001, Kenen served as the president of the Eastern Economic Association. Currently, he is a senior fellow in international economics at the Council on Foreign Relations and a professor of economics and international finance at Princeton University. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Group of Thirty.
