Peter Budaj: Slovak Hockey Goaltender
Early Career and NHL DraftBorn in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, Peter Budaj began his hockey career as a youth. He represented Slovakia at various international tournaments, including the World Junior Championship and the Olympics. In 2001, he was selected by the Colorado Avalanche with the 63rd overall pick in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft.
NHL Debut and Early Career
Budaj made his NHL debut in 2005 with the Colorado Avalanche. He spent six seasons with the team, serving as a backup goaltender behind Patrick Roy and Jose Theodore. In 2011, he signed a two-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens.
Career Journey: Winnipeg, Los Angeles, and Tampa Bay
In 2014, Budaj was traded to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Eric Tangradi. However, he did not appear in an NHL game with the Jets, instead playing for their minor league affiliate. As a free agent in 2015, Budaj joined the Los Angeles Kings, where he spent two seasons and became a part of the trade that sent Ben Bishop to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2017. Budaj spent one year with the Lightning before being traded back to the Kings in 2018.
National Team Representation
Budaj has represented Slovakia at numerous international events, including the World Junior Championship, Olympics, and World Championship. He helped his country win the bronze medal at the 2003 World Junior Championship and represented Slovakia at the 2006 and 2014 Olympics.
Personal Life
Budaj is a devout Christian, which has led to comparisons to the character Ned Flanders from the animated television show "The Simpsons" by his teammates with the Colorado Avalanche. He has embraced the humor, even painting Flanders on his goalie mask.
Accomplishments and Recognition
Budaj participated in the NHL YoungStars Game in 2007. He is known for his athleticism and quick reflexes in the net.
