Peter Vallone Sr.
Born in New York City to Judge Charles J. Vallone, Peter Vallone Sr. developed a political inclination from his father. His mother, Leah Vallone, a teacher and Democratic Party worker, also influenced him.
Education and Early Career
Vallone received a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences and a law degree from Fordham University. From 1974 to 2001, he served on the New York City Council, representing Astoria, Queens.
City Council Speaker
In 1986, Vallone was appointed as the Council's Speaker, a position he held for 16 years. As Speaker, he played a pivotal role in approving amendments to the city charter, expanding the Council's budgetary authority.
Gubernatorial and Mayoral Campaigns
Vallone ran unsuccessfully for Governor of New York in 1998 and Mayor of New York in 2001. After his political setbacks, he returned to practicing law in Astoria and teaching political science at Baruch College.
Personal Life and Legacy
Vallone married Tena, and together they had three children: Peter Jr., Paul, and Perry, as well as seven grandchildren. His son, Peter Vallone Jr., followed in his footsteps, serving on the New York City Council since 2002.
Book and Ongoing Influence
Vallone's memoir, "Learning to Govern: My Life in New York Politics, From Hell Gate to City Hall," chronicles his political journey. While he lost his political prominence, he still maintains some connections and continues to support political figures, such as Michael Bloomberg and Mark Green.
