Early Life and Education

Pyotr Alekseyevich Krivonogov was born in the village of Kiyasovo in the Vyatka Governorate (present-day Udmurtia) on either September 8, 1910, 1911, or October 17, 1911, according to various sources. His father died during the Civil War, and at the age of 12, Krivonogov became a farm laborer and later a homeless child.

Artistic Training

In 1924, Krivonogov found himself in the town of Kineshma, where he was placed in an orphanage. After completing seven years of school, he was accepted into the art preparatory department of the Leningrad Academy of Arts in 1930. He then enrolled in the Academy's Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, where he studied under renowned artists Isaac Brodsky, Pavel Shillingovsky, and Konstantin Yuon.

Military Service and Artistic Career

In 1939, Krivonogov was conscripted into the army and joined the Red Army Studio named after Mitrofan Grekov in 1940. He fought in the Great Patriotic War from Moscow to Berlin, documenting his experiences through sketches and paintings. After the war, he became a renowned battle painter.

Notable Works and Awards

Krivonogov's painting "Victory" (1948) earned him the Stalin Prize Second Class in 1949 and a place of honor in the Central Museum of the Armed Forces in Moscow. He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star and the prestigious Gold Medal named after Mitrofan Grekov for his outstanding contributions to military art in 1967.

Legacy and Recognition

Krivonogov was recognized as a Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1955. In 1997, a museum dedicated to his life and work was opened in his birthplace, the village of Kiyasovo. Krivonogov's paintings continue to be celebrated for their historical significance and artistic brilliance.
