Early Life and Education

- Johann Baptist Karl Graf von Goess was born in Florence, Italy on February 8, 1774, into an Austrian noble family.

- He studied law at the University of Vienna.

Early Career
- In 1803, Goess became governor of Dalmatia.
- A year later, he was appointed governor of Carinthia.
- In 1806, he became governor of Carinthia and Styria.
- From 1808 to 1809, he served as governor of Trieste.
Napoleonic Wars and Captivity

- During the War of the Fifth Coalition, Goess was captured by French forces.

- After his release, he was appointed governor of Galicia, a position he held until 1815.

Governor of Lombardy-Venetia

- In 1815, Goess became governor of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia.
- In 1819, he was also appointed court chancellor of the kingdom.
Recognition and Honors

- In 1821, Russian Emperor Alexander I awarded Goess the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky.
