Philip Carteret: British Naval Officer, Explorer, and Navigator

Born on the island of Jersey, Philip Carteret embarked on a life of adventure as a young naval officer.

Round-the-World Expedition

In 1766, Carteret joined a Royal Navy expedition led by Samuel Wallis. Carteret was to sail the sloop "Swallow" alongside Wallis' ship, "Dolphin." However, the vessels became separated shortly after passing through the Strait of Magellan.

Voyage of Discovery

Alone on the "Swallow," Carteret explored the Pacific Ocean, charting new coastlines and discovering numerous islands, including the Pitcairn Islands. He also made significant scientific observations, collecting specimens and recording his findings.

Return to England

In March 1769, Carteret returned to England, having circumnavigated the globe. His voyage was a significant contribution to the expansion of European knowledge of the Pacific Ocean.

Later Life and Legacy
