Early Life and Education
Filipp Aleksandrovich Agaltsov was born in Soldatskoye, Tula Oblast, Russian Empire, on January 8 (20), 1900. A dedicated Communist from a young age, he joined the Bolshevik Party in 1919.
Early Military Career
Agaltsov entered the Red Army in 1919 and fought in the Russian Civil War. He graduated from the Kiev Military-Political School in 1925 and the V. I. Lenin Military-Political Academy in 1932. After completing the academy, he was appointed assistant commander of an aviation regiment for political affairs. This marked the beginning of his lifelong connection with aviation.
Aviation Career
Despite being a political officer, Agaltsov pursued an intense interest in aviation technology. From 1935, he served as deputy head of the political department of an air brigade and flew various types of aircraft. In 1937-1938, he volunteered to fight for the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War.
Upon his return, Agaltsov became a member of the Military Council of the Red Army Air Force (BBC RKKA). However, he soon requested a transfer to a field command in the Baltic Special Military District. In January 1941, he became commander of a high-speed bomber regiment, with which he entered World War II.
World War II
In August 1941, Agaltsov was recalled from the front and appointed head of the Tambov School for Military Aviation Specialists. In February 1943, he commanded an assault aviation division that distinguished itself in the Battle of Kursk, the liberation of Left-Bank Ukraine, the crossing of the Dnieper, and the Korsun-Shevchenkivska and Lvov-Sandomierz operations.
Post-War Commands
After the war, Agaltsov commanded an aviation corps and an air army. From 1949 to 1956, he served as first deputy commander-in-chief of the Air Force, from 1956 to 1958 as inspector general of the Air Force, and from 1958 to 1962 as deputy commander-in-chief of the Air Force.
Commander of Long-Range Aviation
In 1962, Agaltsov became commander of the Long-Range Aviation of the Air Force, a position he held until 1969. Under his leadership, the Soviet Union conducted extensive tests and deployments of new aviation technology.
Later Years
From 1969 onwards, Agaltsov served as inspector-advisor to the Group of Inspectors General of the USSR Ministry of Defense. He passed away in Moscow on February 22, 1992.
