Philipp Wilhelm Grimm: The Father of the Brothers Grimm
Early Life and EducationPhilipp Wilhelm Grimm was born in the parsonage of the town of Steinau an der Straße on August 15, 1751. He was the son of Friedrich Grimm the Younger, a pastor, and Christina Elisabeth Heilmann. Grimm studied law at the High School of Hanau, the High School of Herborn, and the Law Faculty of the University of Marburg.
Legal Career
In 1778, Grimm was appointed as an advocate at the Court of Hanau. He soon transferred to the magistrate, where he served as Town Registrar in 1782 and as Town Secretary in 1787. Concurrently, in 1782, he became Land Registrar of the Büchenthal district in the county of Hanau.
Амтман of Steinau
In 1791, Grimm left his previous positions to become Amtmann (district chief) of Steinau. He moved there with his wife and five sons: Jakob, Wilhelm, Karl, Ferdinand, and Ludwig. In Steinau, Grimm held multiple positions, including Chief Magistrate, Land Judge, and local notary.
Demanding Work and Death
The heavy workload forced Grimm to devote almost all his time to his duties, despite fatigue or illness. In 1796, a common cold developed into double pneumonia, which cut short his life at the age of 44.
The Brothers Grimm's Legacy
The large house built for Amtmann Grimm in the center of Steinau now serves as the Brother Grimm Memorial Museum. It commemorates the influential work of his sons, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, who became renowned for their fairy tales and contributions to German folklore and linguistics.
