Henri Alekan, a renowned French cinematographer, director, and screenwriter, was born in Paris in 1909. He graduated from the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumière with a degree in cinematography.

Early Career as an Assistant Operator

Alekan began his career as an assistant cameraman under Georges Périnal. He assisted on several films, honing his skills and gaining valuable experience.

In 1934, Alekan debuted as an independent operator. He collaborated with acclaimed directors such as Marcel L'Herbier, Marcel Carné, Robert Bresson, and Jules Dassin. His cinematography in films like "Hôtel du Nord" (1938) and "The Children of Paradise" (1945) earned him international recognition.

Directorial Debut and Filmmaking

In 1960, Alekan made his directorial debut with "Dialogue des Carmélites," a musical based on the opera by Francis Poulenc. He wrote the screenplay and directed both the theatrical and television versions of the film. He went on to direct several other films, including "Le journal d'une femme de chambre" (1964) and "Laissez-passer" (2002).

Family and Legacy

Alekan had two sons, Yves and Claude, who also pursued careers as cinematographers. Claude Alekan is known for his work on films like "The Conversation" and "Apocalypse Now."
