Early Life and Education
Philippe Entremont was born into a family of musicians, with a conductor father and pianist mother. He studied at the Paris Conservatory under the tutelage of renowned pianists Jean Doyen and Marguerite Long.
Piano Career
Entremont's breakthrough came in 1951 when he won fifth place at the Long-Thibaud-Crespin International Piano Competition. He also received a second prize at the competition in 1953 and became a laureate of the Harriet Cohen International Music Award. In 1952, at the age of 18, he made his acclaimed debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Over the next three decades, he enjoyed a distinguished solo career, performing worldwide.
Collaborations and Recordings
Entremont collaborated extensively with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy, producing notable recordings such as Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. He later gained critical acclaim for his recordings of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Bernstein.
Conducting Debut
In 1968, Entremont made his conducting debut with a recording of Mozart's Piano Concertos Nos. 13 and 17 for Columbia Records, in which he both performed as a pianist and conducted the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris Collegium Musicum.
Orchestral Leadership
From 1976 to 1991, Entremont served as the artistic director of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. He also led the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra (1980-1986) and the Denver Symphony Orchestra (1986-1989). Throughout his career, he collaborated with numerous other orchestras, including the Israel Chamber Orchestra and the Shanghai Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra.
Recent Collaborations
Since 2004, Entremont has been the principal guest conductor of the Munich Symphony Orchestra. He led the orchestra on its first-ever American tour in 2005, performing as both a conductor and a pianist. Since 2005, he has also served as the director of the American Conservatoire in Fontainebleau.
