Pierre-Louis Ginguené
Pierre-Louis Ginguené was a French poet, critic, and historian. He was born in Rennes on April 25, 1748, and died in Paris on November 16, 1816.
Literary Career
Ginguené began his literary career as a poet, publishing his first poem, "La Confession de Zulm?", in 1775. He also worked as a music critic, supporting the Gluckists in the Querelle des Bouffons. He wrote for the journal "La feuille villageoise", which aimed to spread knowledge about the French Revolution.
Political Involvement
During the Reign of Terror, Ginguené was arrested but released after the fall of Robespierre on July 27, 1794 (9 Thermidor). He was a member of the Grand Orient de France, the largest Masonic lodge in France.
Educational Reforms
As a member of the executive commission on public education, Ginguené played a significant role in reforming French schools. He also lectured on Italian literature in Paris.
Historical Work
Ginguené's most important work is his "Histoire littéraire d'Italie" (1811-1824), a history of Italian literature based largely on Girolamo Tiraboschi's "Storia della letteratura italiana". The last two volumes of this work were partially written by the Italian writer Francesco Salfi.
