Path to Success
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, a renowned professional boxer, embarked on his journey in the lightest weight division, the minimumweight. At the tender age of 17, he made his professional debut in December 1994.
Rise to the Top
In 1997, Wonjongkam shifted his focus to the light flyweight division and, after six years of honing his skills, he seized an opportunity to fight for the title. In March 2001, he triumphed over the undefeated Filipino, Malcolm Tunacao, claiming the coveted WBC world championship.
Unrivaled Reign
Wonjongkam went on to defend his title an astonishing 18 times. However, in July 2007, his reign was halted by Japanese Daisuke Naito, the very opponent he had previously vanquished twice. This defeat snapped Wonjongkam's incredible 56-fight unbeaten streak.
Reclaiming the Throne
Determined to reclaim his glory, Wonjongkam rebounded in March 2010, defeating Koki Kameda, who had previously stripped Naito of the title. His victory once again earned him the WBC world championship.
Legacy and Recognition
In 2012, the WBC bestowed upon Pongsaklek Wonjongkam the prestigious honor of "Fighter of the Decade," a testament to his exceptional skills and indomitable spirit within the sport of boxing.
