Early Life and Legal Career

Pratibha Patil, born in December 1934, hails from the state of Maharashtra. Before entering politics, she was a practicing lawyer.

Political Journey

In 1962, Patil began a distinguished political career, getting elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for over 20 years as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). She held various ministerial positions in the state government and served as a member of the lower house of the national parliament. In 2004, she was appointed Governor of Rajasthan.

Nomination for President

In the history of India, Pratibha Patil has made history as the first woman to be nominated for the post of President. At the age of 72, she is the candidate of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the supporting Left parties.

Election Details

The presidential election is scheduled for July 19th. Patil will face opposition from Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the current Vice President.

Constitutional Role of the President

According to the Indian Constitution, the President is elected for a five-year term by an electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament and state legislative assemblies. The President acts as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, approves the appointment of the Cabinet, and has the power to dissolve state legislatures and remove state governments.
