Early Life and CareerQuintus Fabius Pictor was a prominent Roman senator and the first of the "senior annalists," writers of Roman history. He is known for his "Annals," written in Greek, which covered the period from the mythical origins of Rome to the recent events of the Second Punic War.
Military and Diplomatic Service
Pictor played an active role in Roman military and political affairs. He fought in the wars against the Gauls and Hannibal. In 216 BC, after the disastrous defeat at Cannae, Pictor was dispatched by the Senate on an embassy to the Oracle of Delphi.
Chronological Annales
Pictor's "Annals" were arranged chronologically, and he used a variety of sources to construct his narrative. He relied on the "calendars" kept by the College of Pontiffs, personal records of aristocratic families like the Fabii, and various legends.
Influence on Roman Historiography
Pictor's work was highly influential on subsequent Roman historians. Polybius, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and Titus Livius all drew upon his writings.
