Early Life and Education

Rachid Ghannouchi was born on June 22, 1941, in the village of El Hamma, Tunisia. Growing up in a rural area with limited access to education and resources, Ghannouchi faced challenges from a young age. Despite these obstacles, he pursued education at the local Zaytouna school and later moved to France for higher studies at the prestigious Sorbonne University.

Time Abroad

After completing his studies in France, Ghannouchi traveled and worked in Europe for several years, taking on jobs as a grape picker and a dishwasher. These experiences exposed him to different cultures and broadened his perspectives.

Role in the Tunisian Revolution

Upon his return to Tunisia in 1979, Ghannouchi founded the Tunisian Renaissance Party, also known as the Ennahda Movement. The party was committed to promoting Islamic values within a democratic framework. In 1991, Ghannouchi was forced to leave the country and spent the next two decades in exile in the United Kingdom.

Return to Tunisia

In the wake of the Tunisian Revolution in 2011, Ghannouchi returned to his homeland and played a key role in the country's political transition. He led Ennahda to victory in the 2011 elections and served as Prime Minister from 2011 to 2014.

Ghannouchi has received numerous awards for his contributions to democracy and political reform in Tunisia and beyond. In 2012, he was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World and awarded the Chatham House Prize. In 2016, he received the Bajaj Jamnalal Award for promoting Gandhian values.
