Biography of Racho Angelov

Early Life and Education

Racho Angelov was born on May 21, 1873, in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. He received his education at the Faculty of Medicine at St. Vladimir's Kiev University in Ukraine, graduating in 1896. During his time in university, he joined the social-democratic movement.

Political Career

After completing his education, Angelov worked as a rural physician starting in 1896. In 1898, he became a member of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Workers' Party. He served as a military doctor in the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 and World War I.

During the interwar period, Angelov actively participated in the trade union movement. From 1920 to 1924, he was the chairman of the Bulgarian Doctors' Union, and from 1940, he held the honorary position of chairman. He was arrested by the authorities during the September Uprising in 1923 and the April Events in 1925.

Communist Activism

Angelov founded and led the communist doctors' union, which later adopted the name "Public Physician" in 1931. During World War II, he engaged in underground activities against the regime and organized the protection of Jewish doctors. In 1942, he was entrusted by the Bulgarian Workers' Party (BRP) to negotiate with representatives of bourgeois parties for the creation of a unified anti-fascist Fatherland Front.

Minister of Health and Later Years

Angelov was arrested by the authorities and interned in Omurtag. After the establishment of the Fatherland Front government, he became a member on September 9, 1944, serving as the Minister of Health. He led the establishment of a healthcare system in Bulgaria based on socialist principles. From 1947, he worked in the Presidium of the People's Assembly.

Legacy

Racho Angelov dedicated his life to serving the Bulgarian people and fighting for social justice. His contributions to healthcare and the communist movement have left a lasting impact on the country. He passed away on December 9, 1956, in Sofia, leaving behind a legacy of activism and public service.
