Education and Early Career

Klaus Iohannis, born on June 13, 1959, in Sibiu, Romania, is a physicist with a degree from Babeș-Bolyai University (1983). He initially worked as a physics teacher in Sibiu before becoming deputy chief school inspector (1997-1999) and chief school inspector (1999-2000) of Sibiu County.

Political Career

Iohannis joined the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania (1990) and became its president in 2001. In 2000, he was elected mayor of Sibiu, a role he held for four consecutive terms (2000-2012). During his tenure, he focused on infrastructure development, tourism promotion, and attracting foreign investors.

Joining the National Liberal Party

In 2013, Iohannis joined the National Liberal Party (PNL) and became its first vice-president. He was elected president of PNL in 2014 with 95% of the vote.

Presidency

As part of the Christian Liberal Alliance, Iohannis ran for president in 2014. He won the election on November 16, 2014, with 54.53% of the vote. Iohannis took office on December 21, 2014, and suspended his PNL membership to adhere to Romania's constitutional prohibition on presidential party affiliations.

During his first year in office, Iohannis clashed with Prime Minister Victor Ponta over corruption allegations, leading to Ponta's resignation. Iohannis has prioritized anti-corruption efforts and judicial reforms throughout his presidency.

International Visits

As president, Iohannis has visited numerous countries, including France, Moldova, Germany, Poland, Italy, Latvia, Croatia, Spain, the United States, and Israel.

Personal Life

Iohannis is married to Carmen Iohannis (née Lăzurcă), an English teacher. He is fluent in Romanian, German, and English. Iohannis is a member of the Evangelical Church of Augustan Confession in Romania.
