Early Life and Education

Claudia Roth was born into a Catholic family in Ulm, West Germany, on May 15, 1955. Her mother was a teacher, and her father was a dentist. After graduating from high school, Roth briefly pursued a career in theater in Munich, but she dropped out after two semesters. She then worked briefly in theaters in Memmingen, Dortmund, and Unna.

Political Career

Roth first entered politics in 1971 by becoming a member of the Young Democrats, the youth wing of the Free Democratic Party. She later joined the Green Party in 1987. From 1985 to 1989, she served as press secretary for the Green parliamentary group.

In 1989, Roth was elected to the European Parliament, where she served as a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Civil Liberties and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. She was also vice-president of the Turkey-EU Parliamentary Committee.

In 1998, Roth was elected to the Bundestag, the German federal parliament. She became chair of the Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid Committee.

Leadership of the Green Party

In 2001, Roth was elected co-leader of the Green Party. She remained in this position until 2013, making her the longest-serving co-leader in the party's history. Under Roth's leadership, the Green Party became more involved in international affairs, focusing on human rights and environmental issues.

Other Activities and Advocacy

In addition to her political career, Roth has been an active advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and the Kurdish minority in Turkey. She has also participated in demonstrations for tolerance and equality, including the Gay Pride parade in Warsaw and the Christopher Street Day in Dresden.

Roth is a member of the Board of Trustees for the 2011 Women's World Cup and the German Academy of Football.
