Early Career

Aitor Alkorte began his football journey in the Basque Country, joining the youth ranks of Athletic Bilbao in 1978. By 1985, he had broken into the reserve team and made an impressive 40 appearances before making his senior debut under manager Howard Kendall in October 1987.

Breakthrough at Athletic Bilbao

Alkorte's solid defensive abilities soon cemented his place in the starting lineup for Athletic Bilbao. Over the next five seasons, he played 172 matches for the club, establishing himself as one of the most formidable defenders in La Liga.

Transfer to Real Madrid

Alkorte's impressive performances caught the attention of Real Madrid, and in 1993, he made the high-profile move to the Spanish giants. Alongside Fernando Hierro, he formed a formidable central defensive partnership, contributing to two league titles in his four seasons at the club.

Return to Athletic Bilbao

Alkorte returned to his beloved Athletic Bilbao in 1997, where he played out the remainder of his career until his retirement in 2004. He helped the club regain its place in the UEFA Cup during his final season.

International Career

Alkorte made his debut for the Spanish national team in 1990 and went on to represent his country at three World Cups (1994, 1998, and 2002) and one European Championship (1996). With 54 appearances for Spain, he played a key role in one of the team's most successful periods.
