Biography of Rahmon Nabiyev

Rahmon Nabiyevich Nabiyev was born on October 5, 1930 in the village of Shaykhburkhon, Khujand District (now Bobojongafurovsky District of the Sughd region). He passed away on April 11, 1993.

Early Life and Political Career

Rahmon Nabiyev was born on October 5, 1930. In 1948, he started working in a collective farm. After 15 years of work, he joined the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Tajikistan. From 1971 to 1973, he served as the Minister of Agriculture, and from 1973 to 1982, he was the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Tajikistan. In 1982, he became the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Tajikistan. In 1990, he was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic, and in September 1991, he became its Chairman. On November 24, 1991, he was elected as the first President of Tajikistan through a popular vote.

Civil War and Resignation

In March 1992, a civil war broke out in the country. Initially, people demanded democratic reforms, the adoption of a new constitution, and the reinstatement of General Mamadaez Navjuvanov as the Minister of Internal Affairs. Rahmonov and the Speaker of the Parliament, Kenzhaev, reinstated Navjuvanov to his position. However, demands for the resignation of the Speaker, the entire parliament, and eventually the President began to emerge. Anti-government protests took place in Dushanbe's main square, and soon a pro-government rally in support of Nabiyev was organized on the other side of the square. Both sides became armed.

On May 11, 1992, under pressure from the opposition, Rahmon Nabiyev agreed to the formation of a coalition government with their participation. On September 7, 1992, he attempted to fly to Khujand from Dushanbe airport, but he was stopped by a crowd mostly composed of criminal elements. Tanks and the Ministry of Internal Affairs arrived at the airport to prevent harm to the President. At 4:30 PM, Nabiyev signed a letter of resignation.

Controversial Death

Nabiyev passed away on April 11, 1993, in his house in Khujand. The exact cause of death is unknown. According to the official version, he died from a heart attack. However, other theories suggest that he committed suicide (shot himself) or was killed. Nabiyev's relatives also claim that Sangak Safarov was involved in his death. Safarov had recently killed his fellow bodyguard, Fayzali Saidov, after an argument on March 29.
