Rahul Peter Das, Indologist
Early Life and EducationBorn in Germany in 1954 to Indian parents, Rahul Peter Das spent his formative years in Calcutta, where he completed his schooling and obtained a medical degree. His passion for Indology led him to pursue higher studies in the field at the universities of Cologne, Hamburg, Bonn, and Kiel. In 1981, he earned his master's degree and in 1985, his doctorate from the University of Hamburg.
Academic Career
Das's specialization lies in the study of the Vedas, Ayurveda, Vriksh-Ayurveda, and Bengali, particularly in the realm of folk and syncretic religions. From 1981 to 1994, he conducted extensive research in Ayurveda at the universities of Bonn and Groningen in the Netherlands, while simultaneously teaching Sanskrit and Bengali at the University of Hamburg. In 1994, he was appointed professor of modern Indian philology at the University of Halle.
Contributions to Indology
Das has authored numerous scholarly publications and has been a frequent speaker at conferences and lectures both in Germany and internationally. His work has contributed significantly to the understanding of Indian philosophy, religion, and cultural traditions. Notably, he has served as dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and director of the Center for Languages at the University of Halle.
Honors and Affiliations
In recognition of his contributions, Das was awarded the prestigious Hind Rattan Prize in 2006. He is also a member of the council of the international organization EuroIndia Centre, which fosters cultural and academic exchange between Europe and India.
