André-Marie Ampère, born on January 22, 1775, in Lyon, France, was a renowned physicist, mathematician, and natural philosopher who made groundbreaking contributions to electromagnetism.

Early Life and Education

Ampère hailed from an aristocratic family. Despite his lack of formal schooling, he developed a profound interest in natural sciences and mathematics through self-study. At 14, he immersed himself in the works of Euler, Lagrange, Bernoulli, Laplace, and Lagrange, laying the foundation for his scientific endeavors.

Teaching and Early Research

After giving private lessons in Lyon, Ampère accepted a position as a physics and chemistry teacher in Bourg-en-Bresse. In 1804, he published a treatise on probability theory, earning him recognition within the scientific community.

Paris and the Polytechnic School

Ampère was later appointed to the prestigious Polytechnic School in Paris. In 1809, he became a professor there and played a significant role in shaping the institution's scientific curriculum.

Electrodynamics and Magnetism

Ampère's focus shifted to the study of electrodynamics, the connection between electricity and magnetism. In 1820, inspired by Ørsted's discovery of current's influence on magnets, he formulated Ampère's rule to predict current's direction. He also established Ampère's law, describing the force between two current-carrying conductors.

Ampère's Magnetic Theories

Ampère's theoretical framework explained magnetism as the result of microscopic circular currents. His Ampère's theorem laid the foundation for understanding magnetic properties.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1822, Ampère discovered the magnetic effects of current-carrying coils, known as solenoids. He passed away on June 10, 1836, in Marseille, France.
