Ralph Goodale is a renowned Canadian politician who served as the country's Minister of Finance.
Early Life and Career
Born and raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, Goodale spent the majority of his life there before entering politics in Ottawa. In 1974, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada, but he lost his seat in 1979. In 1981, he returned to Ottawa after winning the leadership of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party.
Ministerial Positions
Prior to the 1993 election, Goodale aligned himself with Jean Chrétien and served as Minister of Agriculture. He later held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Natural Resources and Minister of Infrastructure.
Minister of Finance
Upon Paul Martin's appointment as Prime Minister on December 12, 2003, Goodale became the Minister of Finance. He remained in this role until the Liberal Party's defeat by Stephen Harper's Conservative Party in 2006.
Parliamentary Leader
Following the Conservatives' victory, Goodale served as Parliamentary Leader of the Liberal Party in the shadow cabinet led by Michael Ignatieff.
Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
After the Liberal Party's victory in the October 2015 election, Goodale was appointed Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness in Justin Trudeau's government.
