Raluca Turcan: Romanian Politician and Statesman
Early Life and EducationBorn on April 2, 1976, in Botosani, Romania, Raluca Turcan pursued a diverse education. She earned a degree in International Economic Relations from the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies in 1999. She later obtained a master's degree in Communications and Public Relations from the National School of Political Science and Public Administration in Bucharest. Turcan also studied Business Russian at the Pushkin Institute in Moscow.
Career in Communications and Politics
In 1999, Turcan began her career as a public relations consultant for Tofan Grup SA. From 2000 to 2004, she served as a parliamentary expert in the Romanian Senate. She was also an associate professor at the Transylvanian University and Romanian-German University in Sibiu from 2001 to 2006.
Turcan's political journey commenced in 2000 as an advisor to the chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL). In 2004, she was elected as a member of the Chamber of Deputies from Sibiu county. As a rising star within the PNL, she emerged as a critic of the then-party chairman, Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu.
Liberal-Democratic and Democratic Liberal Parties
In 2006, Turcan was expelled from the PNL for her vocal opposition. She joined the splinter Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) led by Theodor Stolojan, serving as deputy chairman. In 2007, the PLD merged with the Democratic Party to form the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L), where Turcan continued as deputy chairman.
Reunion with the National Liberal Party
In 2014, the PD-L and PNL reunited. Turcan became deputy chairman and, after the PNL's electoral defeat in 2016, served as interim chair until Ludovic Orban's election as party leader.
Vice-Presidency and Parliamentary Leadership
Turcan has held several key positions in the Romanian Parliament, including Chair of the Culture, Art, and Media Committee and Deputy Chair of the Chamber of Deputies. In 2019, she ran for the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies but lost to Marcel Ciolacu.
Vice Prime Minister
On November 4, 2019, Turcan was appointed Vice Prime Minister in the government of Ludovic Orban. She is known for her leadership during mass protests against the government of Sorin Grindeanu in early 2017.
Private Life
Turcan is married to journalist Valeriu Turcan and has a son named Eric. She is fluent in English, French, and Russian.

Turcan has received various awards, including Honorary Citizen of the State of Nebraska.
