Early Life and Military Career

Ramón Castilla was a Peruvian statesman and military leader who played a pivotal role in Peru's history. Born in Tarapacá in 1797, he fought in the Peruvian War of Independence and rose to the rank of Grand Marshal.

Political Rise

In 1839, Castilla served as Minister of Finance and War under Agustín Gamarra. After Gamarra's death in 1841, Castilla became a prominent figure in the ensuing political turmoil. By 1844, he had gained effective control of the country and was elected President in 1845.

First and Second Presidencies

During his first six-year term, Castilla implemented a series of reforms, including the establishment of a new constitution, the abolition of slavery, and the promotion of education. He also strengthened the country's military and economy. After leaving office in 1851, he returned as President in 1855.

Conflict and Exile

In 1864, Castilla opposed President Pezet and was exiled from Peru. He attempted to return in 1867 but died on arrival.
