Biography of Tomasz Wawrzecki
Tomasz Wawrzecki was a Polish military and political figure, serving as the Deputy Grand Hetman of Lithuania from 1784 and the Grand Standard-Bearer of Lithuania in 1791. He was the son of Tomasz Wawrzecki and Barbara Tizengauzen and received his education at a Jesuit school in Vidzah.
Political Career
Wawrzecki was a supporter of reforms and was elected as a delegate to the Four-Year Sejm (1788-1792) from the Braslaw County in 1788. He was also a member of the pro-constitution movement in 1791. In February 1791, Polish King Stanislaw August Poniatowski offered Wawrzecki the position of the Treasurer of the Lithuanian Court, but he declined due to his opposition to the Targowica Confederation.
Russo-Polish War and Polish Uprising
In 1792, Wawrzecki participated in the Russo-Polish War. During the Polish uprising led by Tadeusz Kosciuszko, Wawrzecki was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General on October 16, 1794. After the Battle of Maciejowice, where Kosciuszko was severely wounded and captured, Wawrzecki was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the Polish insurgent forces from October 10 to November 16, 1794.
Later Years and Death
In 1796, Wawrzecki agreed to take an oath of allegiance to the Russian Emperor Paul I, resulting in his release along with 12,000 Polish prisoners. From 1813, he served as a member of the Temporary Council governing the Duchy of Warsaw. In 1815, Alexander I recognized Wawrzecki's loyalty and appointed him as the Minister of Justice of the Kingdom of Poland, granting him the lifelong title of Senator-Voivode. He passed away on August 5, 1816.
Legacy
Wawrzecki's tomb is located in Vidzy, Braslaw District, Vitebsk Oblast, Belarus. The inscription on the plaque next to the family coat of arms reads, "Companion and comrade of T. Kosciuszko, participant and leader of the uprising in 1794." Wawrzecki was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus in 1786 and the Order of the White Eagle in 1791.
Interesting Fact
The estate of the Wawrzecki family, which was built by Tomasz Wawrzecki himself, can still be found in the village of Vidzy-Lovchinskie. The house was constructed in the late 18th century and is surrounded by a two-hundred-year-old park.
