Rashid Kawawa: The First Prime Minister of Tanzania
Early Career and IndependenceRashid Kawawa was the first Prime Minister of Tanzania, serving from 1972 to 1977. Born into a prominent family in 1925, he joined the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) in the 1950s. As the movement for independence gained momentum, Kawawa held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Local Government from 1960 to 1962.
Prime Minister of Tanganyika
On 22 January 1962, Kawawa became Prime Minister of Tanganyika, succeeding Julius Nyerere who had led the country to independence a year earlier. However, Nyerere soon abolished the position of Prime Minister upon becoming President in December 1962.
Vice President
Kawawa served as Vice President from 1962 to 1964. After the formation of the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964, he became the country's Second Vice President. He held this position until 1972.
Prime Minister of Tanzania
In 1972, the position of Prime Minister was reinstated, and Kawawa was appointed as the first Prime Minister of the newly formed Tanzania. He held this office for five years, overseeing significant infrastructure and economic reforms.
Later Career
After his tenure as Prime Minister, Kawawa held the position of Minister of Defense in 1980. He remained a prominent figure in Tanzanian politics until his death in 2009.
