Early Life and Ecclesiastical Career

Born in Ecuador, Cardinal Raúl Eduardo Vela Chiriboga embarked on his ecclesiastical journey in 1972 when he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Guayaquil and Titular Bishop of Ausafa. Three years later, in 1975, he became the Bishop of Azogues, a position he held until 1989.

Military Chaplaincy and Archbishopric

In 1989, Cardinal Vela Chiriboga was appointed as the Titular Bishop of Pauzera and the Military Ordinary of Ecuador, a role he fulfilled for over a decade. In 2003, he became the Archbishop of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, holding this position until 2010.

Cardinalate and Retirement

On November 20, 2010, Cardinal Vela Chiriboga was elevated to the rank of Cardinal-Priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Via. He participated in the 2013 Conclave, contributing to the election of Pope Francis. On January 1, 2014, he turned 80 and subsequently lost his eligibility to vote in future Conclaves.
