Early Life and Career

Raul Rafael Julia y Arcelay was born in 1940 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His father owned a restaurant in San Juan, and is credited with introducing pizza to the island. Julia's first experiences with public performance came through theater productions at a Catholic private school, sparking his passion for acting. Despite his parents' desire for him to pursue a legal career, Julia studied theater at the University of Puerto Rico.

Transition to New York and Breakthrough Roles

In 1964, Julia moved to New York City and began developing his acting career in theater and television. In 1971, he made his film debut in Don Medford's "The Organization." Julia gained critical acclaim for his portrayal in the 1974 television adaptation of "King Lear" and for his roles in several Broadway productions throughout the 1970s.

Tony Award and Critical Successes

In 1972, Julia won a Tony Award for his performance in "Two Gentlemen of Verona." He went on to receive six more Tony nominations throughout his career. In 1981, Julia starred in the Broadway musical "Nine," solidifying his reputation as a talented performer.

Notable Film Roles

Among Julia's most notable film roles are "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1985), "Tequila Sunrise" (1988), and "Romero" (1989). He also starred in the 1990 thriller "Presumed Innocent" alongside Harrison Ford. Other notable appearances include his portrayal of Dr. Victor Frankenstein in "Frankenstein Unbound" (1990) and Gomez Addams in the "Addams Family" films (1991 and 1993).

Personal Life and Legacy

Julia married twice: first to Magda Vasallo in 1965 (divorced in 1969) and then to Merel Poloway in 1976. He had two sons, Raul and Benjamin. Julia passed away in 1994 at the age of 54 due to complications from a stroke. His body was returned to Puerto Rico for burial, where thousands mourned his loss.
