Ray Cappo: Trailblazer in Hardcore and Krishnacore

Born into the world of hardcore punk, Ray Cappo has played a pivotal role in shaping the genre's evolution. As the vocalist of influential bands like Youth of Today and Shelter, he's left an indelible mark on the musical landscape.

Early Musical Roots

Cappo's journey into music began in his hometown of Danbury, where he hosted a radio show on WXCI. His eclectic playlists showcased the breadth of hardcore, laying the groundwork for his future ventures. He actively supported local hardcore acts and became deeply immersed in the scene.

Founding Youth of Today

In 1985, Cappo joined forces with guitarist John Porcelli to form Youth of Today. Inspired by the straight edge movement, they aimed to revive the genre amidst the decline of old-school straight edge bands. With Graham Phillips on bass and Darren Pesce on drums, Youth of Today quickly gained momentum.

Creating Krishnacore

In the late 1980s, Cappo's exploration of spirituality led him to embrace Gaudiya Vaishnavism and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Inspired, he founded the band Shelter to express his newfound beliefs through music. This marked the birth of "krishnacore," a fusion of hardcore and spirituality.

Establishing Independent Labels

Cappo's entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond music. He co-founded Revelation Records with Jordan Cooper in 1987. The label played a vital role in nurturing the New York hardcore scene, releasing albums by bands like Bold, Sick of it All, and Warzone. Later, he established Equal Vision Records to support krishnacore releases.

Present-Day Activities

Today, Cappo resides in Greenwich Village, New York, where he teaches yoga and promotes vegetarianism. He remains connected to the local Krishna community and engages in martial arts. While he has largely retired from music, he occasionally tours with Youth of Today and Shelter, continuing to inspire fans worldwide.
