Rebecca Long-Bailey: A Labour MP with a Legal and Political Background
Rebecca Long-Bailey is a British Labour politician of Irish descent who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Salford and Eccles since 2015.
Early Life and Education
Long-Bailey was born in Old Trafford, Stretford, on September 22, 1979. Her father, Jimmy Long, was a former Salford docker and later became a Shell employee and union activist in Barton. She attended Chester Catholic High School and worked in call centers, furniture factories, and as a postal worker before pursuing a degree in politics and sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University.
After graduating, she worked as an administrative assistant at a Manchester law firm. Long-Bailey spent her weekends completing legal conversion and solicitor courses in Chester and eventually became a solicitor specializing in National Health Service procurement contracts and property at Hill Dickinson.
Political Career
Entry into ParliamentFollowing the announcement of incumbent MP Hazel Blears' retirement in 2014, Long-Bailey was approached to stand as the Labour candidate in the Salford and Eccles constituency. With support from the Unite the Union trade union and local Labour politicians, she was selected as the parliamentary candidate. In the 2015 general election, Long-Bailey was elected with a majority of 12,541 votes.
Shadow Cabinet Appointments
Long-Bailey is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group, a group of left-wing Labour MPs. She was appointed Shadow Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury in 2015 and replaced Hilary Benn on the Labour Party's National Executive Committee the same year. In 2016, she became Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury and voted against the government's Trident nuclear submarine renewal program.
In 2017, Long-Bailey was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. She supported the triggering of Article 50 to initiate Brexit in 2017 and was re-elected as MP for Salford and Eccles in the same year.
Acting Leader of the Opposition
In the absence of Prime Minister Theresa May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in 2019, Long-Bailey stood in as Acting Leader of the Opposition during Prime Minister's Questions. She was re-elected to Parliament in the 2019 general election with a majority of 16,327 votes.
Current Role and Activism
Long-Bailey has continued to advocate for progressive policies and social justice. She has been a vocal supporter of trade unions, workers' rights, and the fight against austerity. Her political beliefs reflect her commitment to a fair and equitable society.
