Early Life and Education
Reed Hastings was born on October 8, 1960, in Boston, Massachusetts.His father, Wilmot Reed Hastings, served in President Richard Nixon's administration, while his great-grandfather, Alfred Lee Loomis, was a notable lawyer, financier, scientist, inventor, and film executive. Hastings attended private schools in Cambridge before enrolling in the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. However, he ultimately chose to serve in the Peace Corps instead.
Career
Pure SoftwareAfter graduating from college in 1983, Hastings joined the Peace Corps and taught advanced mathematics in Swaziland from 1983 to 1985. He credits his time in the Peace Corps with instilling in him entrepreneurial skills. Upon his return from Swaziland, he pursued a master's degree in computer science from Stanford University, specializing in artificial intelligence.
In 1991, Hastings founded Pure Software, a company specializing in software diagnostics. However, as the company grew, he struggled with management and requested to be replaced as CEO. The board declined his request. In 1995, Pure Software was acquired by Morgan Stanley, and two years later, it was purchased by Rational Software.
Netflix
The idea for Netflix came to Hastings after he was charged a late fee of $40 for renting the movie "Apollo 13." In 1997, he co-founded Netflix with former Pure Software employee Marc Randolph as a DVD-by-mail rental service. Hastings became the company's CEO in 1998.
Under Hastings' leadership, Netflix has grown into a global streaming giant with a library of over 100,000 movies and over 100 million subscribers worldwide. He believes in giving employees freedom and responsibility, offering unlimited time off and a transparent workplace culture outlined in the company's "Culture Code."
Board Positions and Philanthropy
Hastings has been an advocate for educational reform in California and served as a member and president of the California State Board of Education. He has also invested in and supported charter schools. Additionally, he has contributed significant funds to organizations focused on education and policy issues.

Hastings is married to Patricia Ann Quillin, and they have two children. They reside in San Francisco.
