Regina Hildebrandt Biographical Sketch

Regina Hildebrandt, a distinguished German biologist and politician, was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). She made significant contributions to East German society, serving as Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in 1990.

Early Life and Education

Born in Berlin, Hildebrandt attended school without joining the Communist youth organization. This hindered her admission to the University of Berlin, where she studied biology from 1959 to 1964. She earned her doctorate in 1968.

Career in Science and Politics

Hildebrandt worked at VEB Berlin-Chemie for 15 years, specializing in quality control. Later, she dedicated herself to working with diabetic patients. Her political involvement began in 1989 when she joined the civil movement "Democracy Now." She officially became a member of the SPD GDR on October 12, 1989, and was elected to the People's Chamber of the GDR in the first free elections.

Ministerial Roles

In the first democratically elected government of the GDR, led by Lothar de Maizière, Hildebrandt served as Minister of Labor and Social Affairs from April to August 1990. After German reunification, she was elected to the board of the SPD. In autumn 1990, Hildebrandt became the Minister for Labor, Social Affairs, Health, and Women's Affairs in the state government of Brandenburg. She held this position until autumn 1999.

Health and Legacy

In July 1996, Hildebrandt was diagnosed with breast cancer. She passed away in 2001 at the age of 60. She was buried in the Forest Cemetery in Woltersdorf. In 2007, a park in the Berlin district of Hellersdorf was named after Hildebrandt, honoring her legacy and contributions to the community.
